AFL is seeking aUtility Market Applications Engineer(AE) in ourGreenville/Spartanburg, SClocation. The Application Engineer will be part of a high-performing team responsible for bridging customer needs and desires with AFL fiber optic cable, accessories and related services. AE's within the AFL Cable Group work directly with customers and end users to understand their network needs and requirements. The primary focus of this position will be on power utility aerial fiber optic cable technologies including Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) and All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) with a secondary focus on the full end-to-end fiber optic solution utilizing AFL's vast array of products and services. This integrated solution approach provides the customer with exceptional performance and enables AFL to continue its strong growth in new and existing markets.
Responsibilities:
Act as the technical contact who works alongside the sales team to jointly achieve the commercials objectives for different regions of the world (North America, South America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Russia, and South Asia).
Review customer specifications and determine the optimum fiber optic cable design using AFL's in-house software and costing models.
Interpret customer specifications compared with industry standards and AFL's internal capability.
Document point-by-point reviews and responses to customer specifications detailing variances and highlighting AFL's capabilities.
Using software such as Sag10 or PLS-CAD to ensure the AFL optical cables will meet customer sag/tension/structural limits.
Generate sag/tension tables, stringing tables, conduct clash analysis for conductors, etc.
Generate the commercial as well as technical details for each quotation including pricing and terms/conditions.
Provide technical support to customers including product selection guidance, cable, and hardware installation instructions and troubleshooting, hardware drawings, cable prep and splicing support, etc.
Aid sales by having in-depth knowledge of competitors' offerings in order to best position AFL technically and commercially with customers.
Conduct frequent product presentations and specific technical discussions with key customers, which will require occasional travel to meet with customers at their location and/or in the field.
Provide feedback to Internal Process Engineering Group on specific process and manufacturing issues with customer orders when necessary.
Assist with on-site customer visits and inspections by hosting inspectors, writing reports, resolving open issues, etc.
Adhere to and promote the environmental, health & safety policies of AFL.
Perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.
Skills/Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering
Previous experience as a transmission line engineer at a utility or engineering consultant is desired
Understanding of fiber optic technology and industry standards, cable installation practices, cable types is desired
Highly motivated self-starter
